HOUSE STEAM HEATER : Pilot On, Not Firing
Have a plumber test the transformer. We just had a similar issue with two boilers in a building we manage. Pilot light is lit and new thermostat was installed. But the burners will not fire. We think a power surge during or post storm fried the transformers and both now need to be replaced.

I need of a recommendation – in the Park Slope area – for a “specialist” in older Steam Heating systems. It’s an older PENNCO Natural Gas furnace which was (of course) working fine last year. The pilot light is on, however, the thermostat does not appear to control it. I assume that some wiring may have been messed up in a recent renovation, but I have no way of knowing for sure and I’m not in love with fiddling around with gas and electricity… ha. Any recommendations/thoughts are welcome. – Gents

Before you conclude that the furnace is broken, you should first verify that the problem is not the thermostat. Take the cover off, unscrew the Rh and W wires, and touch them together. This should start the boiler. If it does, then it’s your thermostat that’s broken. Otherwise, it must be something in your wiring or the boiler itself.
