Butcher block counter top for island? Installer recommendations?

Having beautiful countertops is something that I’ve been wanting for ever. I had a very modern kitchen and there was nothing wrong with it except for the 1980’s plastic countertops that were there when we bought the house. I have always wanted tile in the kitchen ever since I saw a beautiful butcher block with tile on top. Finally I found a company that actually removed my old counter tops and then installed my new tile counters in a little less than 2 days. I mean I am so happy with them I just want people to know about Image Home Improvement. If you live in Arizona and in the Phoenix or Scottsdale area like I do, these guys are the way to go! They are super friendly and got the work done quickly and it turned out so beautiful I am always in my kitchen now! www.imagehomeimprovement.com

Hi all, We had a fire in our house about two weeks before Sandy hit; we’ve just moved back in and one of the last things we have to do is find someone to make and install a butcher block counter for the new island we had built. Our contractor (who is being paid by the insurance company) is having trouble with his usual guys, because all the manpower and supplies are being sucked up by Sandy rehab. He’s willing to deal with someone new just to get the job done. It’s not a big job–the island is only about 24″x42.5″, and we’d need a square edge with a standard 1.5″ overhang. We just need someone to supply and install it. Anyone have a suggestion? Thanks!

Do you need serious, expensive, real butcher block?  Because Ikea has great looking wood block counters, real cheap, easy to install…but it looks slightly different than the old stuff you’d see in a butcher shop.

I had a butcher block top made for my island — from http://www.johnboos.com/ You give them the dimensions and order online, it’s very very heavy, it’s expensive, and it looks gorgeous. You have to be very exact with the measurements, with a tiny bit of overhang from the edge of the counter. They’re very helpful, will talk you through it.

Seconded on Ikea oak block counters.  In fact, i have 2 spare ones new in their boxes in my basement – first purchase were 72″ ones when i needed 96″).  They’re unfinished oak and will drink up a ton of mineral oil & beeswax, but then will look far fancier than they should for the money. Would happily sell you one (or both).

These are great answers–re the Ikea: 72″ is WAAAY too big. Are the countertops cuttable? I only need a piece 24″x44″ (approx). Re Johnboos: how is it installed? Just on the top? Is it heavy enough to sit there without fastening it?

The John Boos stuff looks AMAZING–and since I only need such a small piece, I think I can get it for like $188\. Wow. My only concern is getting it installed properly. The guys that are working here need to be supervised very closely–it’s two steps forward, one step back with them. It’s like the exact opposite of when we renovated the first time two years ago: amazing craftsmen with absent general contractor then, now we have clueless yahoos with a great and responsive GC. Argh.

I’m the wrong person to answer your question re installation. I can see that it’s bolted from inside the cabinet, but if you’re not sure of your guys I suggest you talk to someone who really can do it properly. It should not just sit on top — very heavy and if it slid for any reason, it could cause damage.

Butcher block install is very simple but needs to be done right in order to account for the seasonal expansion and contraction of the wood. It’s basically just drilling larger holes in the cabinet blocking with washers to allow for seasonal movement while still being secure and bolted down. If your contractor can’t handle a simple butcher block top I’d be concerned about anything more complicated that he is doing in your home.

Hey you should check these guys out: http://www.edenoakswoodware.com/  They’re out in Colorado but I’m pretty sure they deliver, and they might be able to refer you to someone to install. They’re super affordable.
