NYC Fire Escapes

Quick Questions. Does anyone know if you can change the look of a fire escape to look more like a balcony than a typical NYC fire escape?

I am an architect and when I was an intern years ago I worked on a project that replaced a fire escape with a much nicer deck with the required fire egress. Yes you can do it but you have to comply with the egress issues. If you want to discuss it you can email me: jorgefontan@gmail.com

You can’t block the existing fire escape but you may be able to add a balcony adjacent to it depending upon the zoning requirements and the existing conditions. Ed Kopel Architects, PC
