looking to renovate my 1920s apartment. Wanted to know where I could find pics of Brooklyn's 1920s townhouse Any suggestions?!

I’m not sure if these responses are all just bots/crawlers, keying in on your phrase of wanting to renovate… or if its simply a collection people who are so intent on shilling their services that they couldn’t be bothered to read your question… but man – talk about sales pitch overload!  You got only 1 answer…  shame.

Here are some links to some VERY good, picture heavy  books about brooklyn and new york in general.  Most libraries will have these and other resources – but they are also great to own if you’re at all interested in it.

http://www.amazon.com/Brooklyn-Then-Now/dp/1571457925
Brooklyn, Then and Now (From the then and now series – a few other good NY titles in this collection)

http://www.amazon.com/Historic-Photos-Brooklyn-John-Manbeck/dp/1596524359/ref=pd_sim_b_7
Historic Photos oh Brooklyn – another good collection that spends a decent amount of time on the downtown and surrounding areas including row homes.

http://www.amazon.com/Old-Brooklyn-Early-Photographs-1865-1929/dp/0486235874/ref=pd_sim_b_1
Old Brooklyn in Early Photographs – focuses specifically on the 1865-1929 date range, and is probably most relevant to your query.

Park slope and other row-house neighborhoods are generally featured pretty heavily in these, and other brooklyn photo books, and you’ll see pictures ranging from their construction in the 1860’s (or so) up through the 1920’s tenement era, and the restoration heavy 30’s and 40’s all the way through contemporary designs.

Just as a note:  Park slope is a fairly older area than 1920.  The building I currently have is also states as having been built in the 1920’s but it is far older…  near as we could figure out – our block and this house have been standing since at least 1875…  potentially older than that.  I’m not saying your house wasn’t built in the 20’s – just that its quite possibly a good bit older.

Additionally – i wouldn’t aim for the 20’s for design inspiration..   it was the tenement era when the buildings were generally patched poorly, dirty, and all sorts of illegal construction happening resulting in lots of non-original (and non inspiring) details.    I would look at turn of the century design, or skip the 20’s into the late 30’s when restoration of these row buildings hit a boom.  If you come across any of the books i mentioned – you’ll see what i mean.

All Renovation specializes in quality restorations, especially of brownstones and townhouses in Brooklyn and Manhattan.  They are listed in the directory, but also have an ad here on the forum.  They also give advice to those doing renovations.  You can contact Robert at 718-351-4099 and take a look at their website: allrenovationllc.com
Good Luck!

what are you looking for specifically? interior design pics from the 1920s? townhouse layouts from that era? color schemes? decorating ideas? photos of renovations in Brooklyn originally from that era?

Good luck on your construction project and if anyone calls 311 on you just remember, we will let you know as soon as someone calls 311 and what the complaint to the Dept of Buildings was so you can correct the problem before an inspector issues you a violation or STOP WORK ORDER.Mark
