Why were original stoop banisters removed?

There are still some of the to be found if you want to replace.  Not cheap though.  If your interested, I could scratch my brain on the name of a few places that I only know by sight.

I just ordered an 1940 tax photo of my house and noticed that back then it had beautiful banisters. Does anybody know the reason why many houses had these replaced with metal, were the old ones falling to pieces?
