Shouldn’t take much to install it. Not sure what the relevance is between the window and the brick building… I would do it. Call me at 347-276-6528 Levi SoHoAppliances

I didn’t have these screens, but I had retractable window and door screens installed when I owned a condo in the Meatpacking district. We had large sliding windows that never came with screens. Ont the first day after taking possession, a pigeon flew in the open window and I immediately called a company to install screens everywhere. I loved them. They worked beautifully and allowed me to keep my windows open and keep birds and insects out. Several companies also make retractable screen doors fro balconies etc. Here’s the link to the company’s website. They are a canadian company but if you call them, they should be able to give you a local installer: http://www.phantomscreens.ca/conduit/window-screens

i haven’t seen any lately, but i have seen some wood ones that have fixed screens which fit in from on the inside. edit – the windows looked EXACTLY like the axions. the fixed screen seemed to partially defeat the purpose of the openness of a casement window when closed. That retractable screen looks really cool! the only thing that has kept me from wooden casement windows is the fact that i will probabally get caught with them open a few times per summer when we have those crazy thunderstorms. [mad dash throughout the house to close windows….] i always wondered how the wooden inside half of the window would hold up if you got them wet a dozen times or so in a five year period. but i absolutely LOVE that retractable screen.

“In Park Slope, the FAR, as of 2003, is 2.01” I’m confused, so i’ll state the obvious. There are also R7B (far 3.0) and other zoning in Park Slope. Have you checked the most recent zoning map? http://www.nyc.gov/html/dcp/html/zone/zmf.shtml

cgowner, Yes. You may have multiple zones with a single split system. Bear in mind there is a certain amount of thinking that has to go into the design. Motorized dampers are what would be used to create zones. You should realize that the more control you put on your system, the more pricy it gets. Ductwork needs to be properly designed and the equipment itself adds cost. Good luck with your new home. As for not using the basement…you could always install a roof top unit, or split units on one or more floors. -S.

The house is almost gutted; so running ductwork is not a problem at this point. The house has gas and I would prefer to stay with gas heat as I’ve had it before and I like the cleanliness of it as well as it being cheaper than electric. I just wasn’t sure of whether I would need separate HVAC units for each zone. The house I am currently in has 2 zones, each controlled by a separate HVAC unit. It works great. Many houses in the area flooded with Sandy and they had to replace their furnaces and hot water tanks. I’m looking to avoid a possible flood risk by not using the basement for mechanicals.

I’m installing a UNICO mini duct system with an auxiliary heating capacity. I’m running it off of the boiler to supplement the baseboard heat when I arrive at the house after the thermostat has been turned down to below 50 for two weeks. Electricity not only wouldn’t provide that capability to heat the place up quickly but would be outrageously expensive.

we are renovating a 3 story brownstone and put in a Daikin Mini-Split system. In this system, there is a big condenser on our room, and then we have 5 air handlers – two on each of the top two floors and one for the basement. It is working great for us (however! – we have yet to get our first electric bill which I fear is going to be enormous – this is an all electric system for heating and cooling, and our mechanical engineer said in very cold weather it can be more expensive than gas. Of course, the weather has been very cold of late). Each is programmable so our house operates on five zones. The air handlers are small enough that we fit them into a couple of dropped ceilings in our bathrooms, and this makes for minimal ductwork.

A few years ago I purchased 14 of the the double glazed interior storms from a company in Wisconsin called Energy Wise Mfg. they can be reached at 563-542-2134 or www.energywisemfg.com , I put these 14 in the portion of my home that was built in the 1860’s and I just love them. This year I ordered another 18 double glazed interior storms for the rest of our home. What I like about these windows is that they are double glazed and the fact that they are compression fit, no tools needed to install and remove. Takes us about 2 or 3 minutes to put them in and 10 seconds to pop them out. This company uses a perfectly clear film that seems extremely tough, I think it’s wonderful. The thermal effeciancy created be the double glazing feature has proven to be a fantastic energy saver and also knocks down some outside noise. I have recomended these to my family and freinds who have enjoyed the same satisfaction as we have. Thanks, Joe

I’m in the same boat, and someone suggested Indow Windows (http://www.indowwindows.com). I haven’t tried them yet, but they look pretty neat. If you do go with them, please post here and again and let us know how well they work.

I have experience with a company for quite a long time. They have done various projects for me that includes brickwork, minor interior/exterior work etc. What can I say? They are reasonable in price range (yes, I have worked with other contractors), punctual, tidy, and skillful. You can call them and see if they are a suitable company for your project.
