We put in Anderson windows last year and are happy with them so far (through this cold winter). We have the “A” series in the front and 200 series in the back. Part of our bid was a slider, casement, and a large transom window so our decision to go with Anderson was, in part, because those priced the best too (other companies came in under for the windows, but much higher on the door and transom). All incidental, but my parents have half Anderson (A-Series) and half Marvins and like the Anderson better.

We don’t love the Champions but 15 of them cost $12,000 installed (that included rebuilding four frames) vs. $30,000 for the Marvins. If I had my way, I’d have original windows with storms. They are the most energy efficient, beautiful, and green. Crystal costs slightly less than Champion but the frame looked bulkier to me. This is our second winter with the Champions and I’m wondering if there was something wrong with the install. We put up plastic for better insulation during this extremely cold weather and it’s billowing out, so we definitely have drafts coming through the windows. Anyone know?

Crystal will be the best bang for the buck. You can call them and get estimate. Yes you will find better windows, but the construction of Crystal windows is pretty good. They are quick and based in Flushing, which also means your money stay in the city. I believe they can have someone come to measure the rough opening once you decide to go with them, and your windows should be ready in ten days (especially at this period of the year). I just bought ten of these windows, and would do it again.

I am in the same situation as I’m looking to replace as well, I ran into Okna windows and I got a demonstration of them and they seemed pretty good for the price. They are replacement windows, so you would use your existing frames

For a space that size, I’d suggest just going into a nice nursery and asking for some advice. If you have a car, Weisner Brother’s on Staten Island has a great selection of plants and several very knowledgeable and helpful staff members. If you take them a photo of your garden space (even on your phone) and dimensions, they can help you choose things. I had a pretty good idea of what I wanted, but wasn’t sure about what tree to get. Based on the maximum height I wanted and our desire for something that was less likely to grow roots into the utilities, they helped me find lots of good options. The plants I got there have all done really well (wintered well) and been healthy. It wasn’t until I bought a hydrangea somewhere local that we got an infestations. Within Brooklyn there’s Kings County Nursery, though I’ve found their help to be more hits than misses. I love the Brooklyn Terminal Market for my annual bedding plants.

Chuck at Dig on Atlantic is very good, and he specializes in the small-scale landscaping of brownstones and townhouses. Be warned, he might be a little pricey.
