Bob’s durham putty is a great suggestion although i would gently remove the moulding and re-do, check for rot or mold behind it etc. In fact, it is a very basic profile so i would probably just replace with new pvc moulding given the location and the fact that there could be lead paint.

@jh, i was not even thinking that – now they have liquid anolin dyes that we put in stains, i was thinking them. they would have to be premixed with a smaller batch of product and then mixed into the larger batch.

and just so people know, there was and i think there still is a black glaziers compound, the same dap 33. it has gotten very hard to find. can possibly still be ordered but most stores will not carry it, even if you ask.

dap still make the glaziers compound and HD still carries it. some hardware stores as well. now that i think of it, it is “Dap 33”. it will stay soft for a long time, hence the need for the points the others mention.

My old carpentry book says leather can be used as a superior alternative to putty that will remain supple over time. I don’t know if that would still be true.

Window putty or glazing putty. It starts off soft and hardens over time. Traditionally it was made with linseed oil. It’s still available but there are also modern variations. I believe Sarco is a popular brand.

You can get a blank strike plate and cut/drill it to fit, or make a template and bring it to a metal shop to cut. I suspect this door needs more than a new strike plate though.

@arkady: cremone bolt might be too limiting of a search as a lot of people do not know what they are (the old term is “cremorne” and it too still returns results) and not many are installed today, at least not in Brooklyn (they are not usually used on entry doors but are instead used as the main or only locking mechanism on a pair french doors opening from the inside onto a patio or into a garden at the back of a house). “surface” bolt is more expansive and most of the sellers do not market the plates as a stand alone part. the op should search this “surface bolt latch plate” but that only returns the smaller, modern latches that i offered him above (and a rotary file can modify one of these if need be).
