Architect, engineer or both?
Either an architect or engineer is legal to draw plans to submit to DOB. Schnall is, I believe an electrical engineer? In this cya world, most professionals want to require you to engage other additional professionals. In your case, architect is more familiar with code intracies such as egress. The existing floor loading caoacity is legally OK for a tub, so that issue is a red herring. You need an architect to advise you on what is doable and approveable. Closing stairs is often a major hurdle, so it may be time to step away from the trees and take a better look at the forest. The existing floor lading ratings

Hi all, I’m looking to add a bathroom to the second floor of my house, which would entail closing off a staircase. I need help figuring out if the existing structure would be able to support a cast iron tub and I also need drawings made up of the bathroom. Do I get an engineer for the structural part and an architect for the drawings, or is an architect able to do both? Thanks!

i’d start with the architect and go from there. architects are familiar with these types of things, and engineers generally prefer to work with professionals instead of homeowners, so i’d feel it out and see what the arch says. i’d speculate that if you have 3×8 joists that sit in a brick pocket, and the tub is near the wall and not in the center of the house, prob not an issue at all. but i’d let the architect choose engineer anyway.

right your architect will call an engineer as needed… also as a trained design professional might have some great ideas about utilizing space to add to your vision
