Hey All,
After hearing how unhappy so many are with Time Warner, we were looking to go the satellite route for our cable TV.
Anyone have any thoughts on DirecTV or Dish Network? My only concern was with a lot of planes passing over I heard it might disrupt the signal- any truth to that?
I’d love to hear from anyone with satellite cable in the Park Slope area- thanks in advance for any advice!

  1. deanmb – i currently get 15mb cable for $44/mo –

why would i want to get 12mb for $60/mo (even if i lived in australia?)

Also with DSL your distance, in feet, to the central office plays a huge part. Problem is for prime brownstone brooklyn there aren’t that many:

    360 BRIDGE ST
    355 14 ST
    547 CLINTON AV
    2177 ALBEMARLE RD

  2. @invisible – DSL doesn’t have to be slow….it’s just Verizon chose it to be this way.

you can buy 12mb dsl in australia for $60 a month.

  3. Rob — You live in Park Slope. You have Time Warner.

Cablevision doesn’t have BBC America. It has BBC News… but I’m not talking about BBC News.

  4. One thing DTV doesn’t have that’s annoying is NY1. But, it’s been so long since I’ve had it I guess I don’t miss it that much anymore.

    it’s BBC on demand.
do a channel search for it

it does, it’s in the 600’s, or 900’s? it’s all on demand tho. all the good shows on BBC are just on demand (it’s free as well).

  6. Cablevision doesn’t have BBC America… it seriously PISSES me off. But I have 39 other channels that I can’t think anyone could possibly watch.

  7. One of my problems with DTV was the menus too but not the speed. I’m not sure if the menus are different depending on what receiver you have but ours wouldn’t allow us to flip through the channel guide without changing the current channel it was on which was annoying.

  8. broadwayron – I have a box from cablevision that’s annoying in the same way – I hit the channel up button a few times, and there’s a lag before it catches up. It was ok when I had a standard lo-def box, but when I got a hi-def box it’s really slow. The regulators should force the cable/satellite TV providers to allow customers to buy their own box & remote, rather than overcharging to rent us lousy boxes and remotes.

  9. lol randolph, plus he has a dog walker!

I do what petebrooklyn does, get a digital antennae and watch the two over-the-air shows worth watching every year.

This DTV thing cracks me up. Seems that it works fine when the weather’s nice and nobody uses it cuz they’re out in the park, but when the storm comes and you run home and see what’s on, it ain’t working! Brilliant business plan, this!
