DirecTV in Park Slope
Hey All, After hearing how unhappy so many are with Time Warner, we were looking to go the satellite route for our cable TV. Anyone have any thoughts on DirecTV or Dish Network? My only concern was with a lot of planes passing over I heard it might disrupt the signal- any truth to that?…
Hey All,
After hearing how unhappy so many are with Time Warner, we were looking to go the satellite route for our cable TV.
Anyone have any thoughts on DirecTV or Dish Network? My only concern was with a lot of planes passing over I heard it might disrupt the signal- any truth to that?
I’d love to hear from anyone with satellite cable in the Park Slope area- thanks in advance for any advice!
I am in the same boat as slopegirl and WBer. Never noticed any difference in actual speed with DSL v. cable modem (but I am not a bandwidth hog in any way). Can’t stand TW and have absolutely no regrets about the switch.
We have lost the signal maybe 3 times in the last 3 years during major storms, and the signal catches back in less than an hour (most of that time is actually caused by a lengthy reboot as far as I can tell). No signal lost during the tornados 2 weeks ago.
I think the dishes look terrible outside any building.

LOL HAHAHAHHAHAHAHA you come on here all the time and bitch about being poor and yuppies and how people in the projects only eat junk food AND THEN it comes out that you are paying $!30 a month for TV and INTERNET???? PLUSA of the day.
oh shut up. im willing to sacrafice and eat Ramen for my VH1 reality tv shows. dont be a hater.
*rob*
Screw all cable companies and dish companies.
All you need is a $20 digital antenna and a computer hooked up to the TV. You can watch anything for the same $50 you’re already spending on the internet.
You just have to be patient because some shows aren’t online until a week after they aired. Not only do I still watch everything I want to, I’m not spending time watching crap just because it’s on.
I’ve been cable free for a year and still watch HBO, Showtime and all the others and save $75 a month.
I wish FIOS was in my area too. I saw a truck down at the end of my block a month or two ago but who the hell knows when it’s actually getting here.
I’ve been very happy with DTV and DSL for years. There are occasional outages during very heavy cloud conditions – thunderstorms and the like.
I looked into switching to Time Warner now that they actually service my block (they didn’t when we first got service, which is why we were on satellite to begin with), and the cost and commitment (their special pricing goes way up in year 2, and you have to commit to 2 years to get the special pricing in year 1) was too much compared to my current set up.
Bottom line, though, is that they are all annoying in their own way. Pick your poison, and read the fine print. Twice.
How did you all end up with a contract? I don’t have one. Maybe there was something different going on in terms of deals way back when I first signed up. Bottom line for the OP, call them up, get all the details, and make your decision.
we use verizon for DSL and directTV for cable
it’s not that much cheaper, but it is cheaper
I did the switch when we moved because I “hated” time warner too…
now I’m reading that we have a two year contract (above) which is shocking, and I immediately want to change.
but no, never noticed a signal weakness in rain or when planes fly over. It probably does face in heavy rain, I’ve just never seen it happen.
Most of the people that I know that made the switch from Time Warner to DirecTV- quickly came to their senses and switched back to Time Warner. Time Warner might have the occasional outage but it tends to happen when most people aren’t home. Satellites go out during storms- when most people ARE home.
I also hate the user interface for DirecTV, maybe I’ve just been brainwashed or spoiled by TW but I avoid using the remote/TV in a non-TW home haha.
In terms of pricing- the DirecTV plans are cheaper but once you add in additional recievers and remotes and taxes and surcharges- It’s gonna be around the same price as Time Warner. Does DirecTV have internet/phone packages? If they do and you want that add some more money onto that and your bill is probably almost identical to a Time Warner bill. I’m sticking to what I have until something better (FIOS) comes along.
