DirecTV in Park Slope
Hey All, After hearing how unhappy so many are with Time Warner, we were looking to go the satellite route for our cable TV. Anyone have any thoughts on DirecTV or Dish Network? My only concern was with a lot of planes passing over I heard it might disrupt the signal- any truth to that?…
Hey All,
After hearing how unhappy so many are with Time Warner, we were looking to go the satellite route for our cable TV.
Anyone have any thoughts on DirecTV or Dish Network? My only concern was with a lot of planes passing over I heard it might disrupt the signal- any truth to that?
I’d love to hear from anyone with satellite cable in the Park Slope area- thanks in advance for any advice!
I had DTV years ago, and one thing that really bugged me was how slow the box reacted to the remote. I like to flip through the channels and on/off the menu, but fast. DTV had a slight delay every time I hit a button, which drove me nuts. And, there always seemed to be a few channels missing, which were available on cable; granted, they were smaller ones, but I often will watch that stuff.
And, I found the reception worse than cable, although cable is no prize, either.
I’d try FiOS, if my building ever gets it, but I would only go back to DTV, if cable were not an option.
If Cablevision was an option, I would consider switching to them over DTV/DSL.
FYI: I saw Verizon laying cable thingies a few weeks ago at the beginning of Gates and they confirmed — it’s for FIOS. So CLinton Hill (parts at least) should now have it.
And now I am torn, because as terrible as Time Warner can be, Verizon can be a million times worse!
WBer –
I didn’t check the fine print for TWC; where I live Cablevision has the monopoly. I switched to triple play and the total bill including taxes and the stupid charges for renting the cable box and remote is $110, price good for 12 months. No contract or commitment. Yes, it can go up after 12 months, but I hope there’s enough options (satellite, Verizon DSL, fios one of these days) that they’ll have to compete on price, or I’ll switch, or maybe go without TV and get video on the internet.
When we want to watch shows on a premium cable channel we don’t subscribe to, my teenage kid finds them and downloads them on his laptop which we can hook up to the TV to watch. Where does he get them? I know nothing.
Mac Mini hooked up to the surround sound as well is my setup.
If you’re savvy, you can find HBO and all online – sidereel.com being one place to start looking. That’s one reason you’re better off using a Mac vs a PC because some sites might have viruses – but I’ve never had an issue.
Yeah, if you watch a lot of TV, need to watch football games realtime etc it’s not the best solution. Or if you’ve got five TV’s in the house it won’t work.
For someone who watches a few shows it’s great. I can still get the Big 4 channels realtime, as well as PBS – everything else is online with Netflix DVD and streaming in the mix.
Bklnite – check the fine print. It’s really hard to get an apples to apples comparison. When I looked at this, it required a multi-year commitment, with higher prices in the out years (Verizon does the same with DSL service). Also, check the channel line up on TW vs. DTV.
Verizon offers a discount on DTV service, but you can’t be a current DTV subscriber.
Flatbushrising – that is a very good solution, though it still requires some technical expertise and a lot of sacrifice, so it’s not ready for prime time. But with an inexpensive computer (Mac Mini, cheap PC) and a Netflix account, you can get a lot of TV/movies. Where do you get the HBO, though?
FIOS has made it to Red Hook? What part????
All the cable companies charge way too much for TV. I never went with satellite cause i didn’t want the hassle of a dish on the building. Why not try to get a better deal from the cable company. I looked at the TWC web site and it says Double-Play (Cable & Internet) $84.90 /mo for 12 months.
(*rob* – 130/mo. you are paying too much.)
or the triple play (+phone) $124.85/mo
When the 12 months run out shop around if the price goes up too much and see if fios is finally available then, or go to DTV or Dish then.
faltbushrising1- you must expound on this… what is it? I just switched to fios (yay Red Hook!) and am saving roughly $100 a mo on my phone/internet/cable.. but I’m not that huge of a watcher. You know its just the HBO- showtime line ups.. And an occasional DWTS….
