I am completely new to renovation – I have been saving ten years to re-do my very old west village studio and do not know where to begin. Could someone direct me to a book or another site that can help? For example, how do I know I need an architect? What ranges of prices should I expect to pay? Where do I start- floors first? How do i live in the apartment at the same time? As a single female, what other issues should I be aware of? How do the architect and contractor work together? How do i know which appliances will fit in my tiny kitchen? Any basic help on where to begin would really help me. Overwhelmed, Severine

Agreed with above poster. Don’t get overwhelmed, people do these projects all the time and survive (usually). You can drive yourself crazy tying to coordinate this process on your own. Just for visual ideas there are some good books on “small spaces” and renovations in urban areas with compact living conditions.

Here’s a link to a good book avaialable on Amazon:

My own perspective as a a former small spaces dweller and an architect is you need to be highly efficient in the selection of fixtures, materials, lighting to make the most of the renovation. It doesn’t have to be a project that breaks the bank, but you want to plan very well to minimize unexpected costs through the project. If you want to run any questions or thoughts by me directly feel free to drop a line or email.

    Best of luck,
