Today the Observer runs a story on the impending arrival of Whole Foods and its possible threat to the Park Slope Food Coop. “Whole Foods is more of an ideological challenge to the Park Slope Food Coop, the headquarters of arch-Park Slope living, than it is a threat to business,” states the article, which points out the the Coop has a higher profit margin than Whole Foods. Writer and Park Slope resident Amy Sohn vowed not to make the switch from the Coop to Whole Foods, but hoped the Coop members “who wind up on the blacklist” would. She says the people who will enjoy the Whole Foods most “Want to replicate their sort of Mall of America experience in New York City, so they love that you can have a Whole Foods in Brooklyn.” Like it or not, the site will be built: the article reveals an Austin-based construction company will begin work 2011 and will open the store late 2012.

I should clarify…I don’t hate Trader Joe’s. I’ve been known to shop there from time to time. But you just have to know what you’re doing. I’m not paying $2.99 for their soy chips, because the exact same chips, manufactured at the exact same facility can be had for $1.99 at Associated.
Sure, some things at TJ’s are cheaper and they do have a FEW products you can’t find easily elsewhere, but the notion that Trader Joe’s is the holy grail of food shopping is a misnomer in my opinion.
Dave, I don’t give a rats ass what ishtar has to say about me. Judging by most of her posts, she’s a self-hating, negative nancy who rarely has anything positive to say about much of anything.
She did just convince me to not attend tomorrow night’s affair, however. I was actually planning on going, but have no desire now to even take the chance of being in the presence of someone like that b*tch. Especially around the holidays.

Trader Joes on Court rules.
And I don’t recall anyone in that neighborhood bitching about them prior to their opening.”
snarkitect, since you’re a fan of Trader Joe’s, as long as you’re on Court, you should really check out The Chocolate Room on Court Street in Cobble Hill. And as long as you’re so close to Atlantic, you should definitely go to Sahadi. Finally, when you’re done shopping, I’d recommend you stop for a bite at Yemen Cafe, across Atlantic from Sahadi / same side as Trader Joe’s.
Biff +1.
TJs has a horrible produce department. the rest of the plaxce is basically frozen food.
11217, I usually agree with you but I actually find the food quality and prices at TJs far superior to other places in the neighbourhood like Key Foods, Gristedes, etc. Also, they seem to stock quite a few products that can’t easily be found elsewhere. Just my experience.
ishtar, why the hate on 11217, especially since you’re agreeing with him?????
Their=they’re
“Trader Joe’s is a joke. Most of the food there is made by the exact same manufacturers as food found in your local Key Food or Associated, but it’s packaged differently for TJ’s and priced higher.
So many are fooled. ”
Aren’t you so enlightened, prick.
Most food products in major grocery outlets, Target and Walmart included, are manufactured in the same plants. They just slap whatever branded labels onto the products and ship them to the appropriate outlets.
Also, the products at TJs tends to be lower than the grocery stores their located near. If I didn’t think you were a smug jerk face I would offer to email you the market report.
