Today the Observer runs a story on the impending arrival of Whole Foods and its possible threat to the Park Slope Food Coop. “Whole Foods is more of an ideological challenge to the Park Slope Food Coop, the headquarters of arch-Park Slope living, than it is a threat to business,” states the article, which points out the the Coop has a higher profit margin than Whole Foods. Writer and Park Slope resident Amy Sohn vowed not to make the switch from the Coop to Whole Foods, but hoped the Coop members “who wind up on the blacklist” would. She says the people who will enjoy the Whole Foods most “Want to replicate their sort of Mall of America experience in New York City, so they love that you can have a Whole Foods in Brooklyn.” Like it or not, the site will be built: the article reveals an Austin-based construction company will begin work 2011 and will open the store late 2012.

  1. M4L,

You are wrong. I’ve been hesitant to meet the brownstoners in person and had cleared my schedule for tomorrow evening. One of the reasons I haven’t wanted to meet is because of the few posters who seemed to have it out for me, and quite frankly I had no desire to be in a position of coming face to face with such people (remember stevieb??) Things have died down and I was feeling more comfortable.

Ishtar has now made me uncomfortable again to thrust myself into a room full of strangers where I know already that some of them have no class nor any restraint.

Don’t underestimate me. I was actually looking forward to meeting some of you. Now, over it.

  2. Jinx, m4l.

11217, no offense, please, but that’s why I’ve stopped emailing you and asking you to join us. I don’t beg. If you want to join us, we’re not hard to find. . . . But you’ll generally find us hard.

    🙂

  3. “She did just convince me to not attend tomorrow night’s affair, however. I was actually planning on going, but have no desire now”

11217, you know I have nothing but love for you, but, having emailed you and implored you to come out with us, big groups or small, winter, spring, summer and fall, I have come to the firm conclusion that there is no way you will EVER come to a gathering. So, due respect, I don’t believe for a SECOND that you were really planning to come to Noki tomorrow night or that ishtar (whom I’m told is a very nice person in person) is the reason you’re not coming now. 4. TJ is generally cheaper and there frozen food is far superior to anything available anywhere…as to what plant it is made in, who owns it, or the political feelings of the checkout person….I truly dont give a $hit.
Nor will I care when I inevitably stop by WH, Key Food, Fairway or any restaurant I go to and where I have no idea where they are buying ANY of their food or the politics of the people preparing it for me.
The politicization of food and eating is got to be the most annoying fad/trend ever.

  5. I haven’t caught up on this entire thread yet, but I will say that, while you couldn’t pay me to set food in the Park Slope Food Co-op, I can’t wait for Whole Foods to open.

As I’ve posted before, CDog only eats Whole Foods organic dog food. (Wet food, *rob*, NOT dry, and, yes, it is cheaper than her Alpo was, so let’s not relitgate this, okay?)

I like TJ’s, too. But when it comes to TJs vs. Whole Foods, I’ll take Whole Foods.
