applestore-080410.jpgOn the same day that the blog FIPS reported a Marty Markowitz staffer saying that Apple was not coming to Brooklyn, we sat in the audience at the quarterly Real Estate Roundtable luncheon at the Brooklyn Historical Society at which veteran commercial broker Robert Greenstone said he knew where the new Apple store would be but was sworn to secrecy. He could have been pulling the audience’s collective leg, but it didn’t seem like it. The whispers after the talk were that it was going to be in or around Atlantic Yards.

  1. Best worldwide Apple Store gossip is ifoAppleStore.com

http://www.ifoapplestore.com/db/?s=brooklyn is the address to ‘Brooklyn’ search results, and I see he’s linked to Brownstoner non-information before…

Speculation for two years or more about location, incl. Williamsburg (The Edge), Bed Stuy(!), others…

If I were you (I’m not), I’d keep an eye on the corner of Adams/Willoughby (365 Adams?). I’ve heard that’s been a possibility for a while now.

    Have a nice day.

  2. It’s a pain if you live/work in Brooklyn to lug your computer to SoHo or 59/5th for genius repair appointment, and all you needed was half your power cord replaced.

Also, a healthy walk to a Brooklyn branch is better than roundtrip just to buy software, or a keyboard cover in person instead of online.

I really want this store, but the security detail have to be on Secret Service level and undercover spies, situated not only in the store but nearby to watch crooks watching you buy a laptop. Plus, they’ll need to take other measures, too:

Put our purchases in Old Navy/Macy’s/Juniors bags.

Record our serial numbers immediately, just in case our new items are stolen — and disable the product as soon as the crime is reported.

Provide Brooklyn purchasers with free versions of that LoJack-type software they sell and activate it before exiting the store.

I want it, but I don’t want to be a sitting duck for the jealous and the desperate.

  3. “And btw, Apple is in Staten Island and Birmingham, Alabama.

Neither of which I’d liken to Beverly Hills”

    They’re in Albany too.

In addition to the points you made, it’ll be a hell of a lot easier to drag your Mac into the genius bar at an Apple store in Downtown Brooklyn than have to lug it into Manhattan.

  4. DeLepp —
ALL of my work shirts are Brooks Bros. It’s annoys the crap out of me that I either have to go to Manhattan or order them online. But it’s right around the corner from MoMA, so I can make a day of it…. oh, and the other Brooks Bros is in lower manhattan near a doctor’s office I had to go to. That worked out ok.

  5. Boerum — the problem is…. If I bought EVERYTHING in NYS, I still have to either pay the use tax or check “Nope, I don’t owe you anything.” The latter seems like a good way to get audited! I don’t have much to audit… but I have a feeling they could make me produce all credit card statements and such. HUGE hassle. HUGE effort on my part… and almost no effort on their end.
