The Brooklyn Paper and Patch report that Atlantic Yards’ Barclays Center will open on September 28th of next year. Nets CEO Brett Yormark says the official opening will be preceded by public tours and events at the arena. Work on the facade is expected to begin in June; at present, 70 percent of foundation work is complete and 30 percent of the structure’s steel is in place, according to Patch.

  1. On the economics, the Independent Budget Office, a city agency, determined that THIS (not some generalized phenomena) ARENA (did I use the right word?) was going to be a money loser.

As for attending or not, the only event mentioned above that would get me to go is that Who farewell tour. When do tickets go on sale?

Yes, the arena is going to be great for Brooklyn. No, it is going to suck in the immediate area. And Ratner was the one who promised affordable housing, so hard to fault anybody who expects him to fulfill his promise.

One last thing: having worked as a roadie, no one is going to play two nights at MSG, break set and re-build it in Brooklyn, then play a third night there. It will be MSG or Barclays; never both.

  2. 11217, when you started comparing Barclays to MSG, the credibility of your argument just went flying out the window. I will admit that these few blocks were not the prettiest before the arena plan was approved and construction started, but there is no way that bringing MSG to this area is a step up.

  3. Sweet, I can’t wait to take my kids to a Nets game. Big improvement over what’s there now, and I’m really glad its convenient to public transportation. I’m so sick of listening to NIMBYs on this, but it will be better without them attending anyway.

  4. You’re right dixiecup, they can do what they please. The fact remains that the place is going to be wildly successful. Perhaps not with a handful of NIMBY’s who live around it, but with the other 2.5 million residents of Brooklyn who are going to loving having this in their borough.
