The Brooklyn Paper and Patch report that Atlantic Yards’ Barclays Center will open on September 28th of next year. Nets CEO Brett Yormark says the official opening will be preceded by public tours and events at the arena. Work on the facade is expected to begin in June; at present, 70 percent of foundation work is complete and 30 percent of the structure’s steel is in place, according to Patch.

  1. OK, I will agree about the entertainment when/if it happens. At present, I see the downside of it more than the upside, particularly since the housing component seems to be on hold. And the mess on the rest of the site will be there for years, if not decades.

  2. By high level entertainment, I’m referring to the Musical Acts which the arena will bring in. There will be more of these than Nets games. People by the likes of Kylie Minogue, Earth Wind & Fire, Stevie Nicks and Rod Stewart, Paul Simon, Adele. These may not be YOUR kind of artists, but they are high level entertainment and are exactly the kinds of shows which will be coming. A night or 2 at Madison Square, a night at Barclays.

Take a look at the Madison Square website. Tons of amazing stuff night after night. This is the future of Brooklyn. If you don’t like it, you shouldn’t have moved to the largest and most crowded city in the United States.

  3. >his is great for Brooklyn and that area.

Exactly why? The added traffic? The bunch of boors who will trash the space, use up all the parking spaces (you don’t believe the majority of people will use public transit, do you?)

It’s been shown over & over again that stadia do not contribute much to the economy, to jobs or to the quality of life, particularly in a residential area.

Of course it is better than the hole in the ground that was there; that does not mean it should’ve been built, with millions of dollars of public money.

1127: “high level entertainment”…BAM is high level. Mark Morris yes. Basketball & schlock Disney, not so much.

  4. 11217, as someone who lives within sight of the arena, I totally agree.

The process sucks, but the end result is going to be great for the neighborhood, Brooklyn, and the overall city.

  5. Contracts have already been signed for the Ringling Bros Circus as well as Disney on Ice. There will be approximately 41 Nets games played here during the year.

The rest will be filled with the Circus, Disney on Ice and high profile Musical Acts on par with Madison Square and Radio City artists. There is also talk to bring some of the U.S. Open events to the arena.

No matter what you think of how it was done, it’s going to be an incredible resource for high level entertainment right here in Brooklyn.

I think it’s going to be terrific. Can’t wait to see some concerts and then stumble home.

  6. I think of low income housing makes sense here due to the abundance of transportation options and social services.

I am having more and more doubts about FCR being able to keep control of the project. They really seem to have bitten off way more than they can chew, as seen by the increasingly desperate ways they are trying to get cash and save money.
