Prepping for the McD's Demolition

McDonald’s on Tillary Closes! [Brownstoner] GMAP
legion, I am all for government regulation when a sizable portion of the nation is too stupid and/or lazy to realize that junk food is not a substitute for healthy eating. If the food industry is allowed to stuff crap into practically everything we eat AND be allowed to pretend that its normal and even healthy, and enough of the public takes it as gospel, we end up with record obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. Something has gotta give, and until people get smarter about making food choices, I’m all for higher nutrition standards being mandated by the government.
hey folks,
I don’t think anyone here is saying McDonald’s isn’t good for a meal once in a while. I eat there all the time.
the arguments here are mainly about the government’s over-reaching restrictions on dietary concerns or gluttonly as an outgrowth of the entitlement mentality.
…with a detour into ancient Roman eating habits.
ditmasSnark,
I see what you’re saying,
what the hell did they call those
things then?
Gag-oriums? Hurl-ociums?
we’ll have to ask Arkady
she would know.
Guvna – this week we are in total agreement
What a bunch of snobs….
McDonalds is terrific, in fact IMO it is the Per Se or Union Cafe of its market – best food & service!
How many people here love to sing the praises of places like The Chip Shop or the fried Chicken at Buttermilk channel, etc, etc, etc – you think that stuff is going to make you any less fat or unhealthy??
If people want to be healthy – EAT LESS
Legion,
I’m not disagreeing with the ritual, or the extent thereof, simply the misuse of the word.
Check out the link on the Wikipedia article labeled Were there really vomitoriums in ancient Rome?” which sums it up nicely:
“The Romans weren’t shy about vomiting, and they had vomitoria–but they didn’t do the former in the latter.”
DitmasSnark,
that’s from wikipedia, it’s inaccurate. the link I posted has an actual description and history.
not only that, but I was watching a special on Pompei on the history channel and I distinctly remember the host pointing out an area in an ancient bath/complex for vomiting.
perhaps historians disagree about the extent of this as a ritual, but it is documented.
Dont sleep on the Steak & Egg breakfast sandwich, you elitist snobs! Try it, we will welcome you to the darkside!
There is little wrong with Mickey Dees. There is everything wrong with eating too much of it. It used to be a treat maybe once every two weeks when I was growing up. Today its the main fare for too many school age children. Like someone said, there are many struggling families proving everyday that we dont have to eat fast food just because we’re poor and overworked.
As for government mandates and entitlements: gimme my single payer healthcare sysem! But also gimme a serious health education and exercise program starting in pre-school!
Actually, that’s a frequent but inaccurate use of the word:
“A commonly held, but false, belief is that Ancient Romans designated spaces called vomitoria for the purpose of actual vomiting, as part of a binge and purge cycle. While Romans on rare occasions did practice vomiting after meals, the conflation of vomitorium with actual vomiting is a recent invention.”
Bring back the McRibb!!
I love locally grown grass fed stuff like the rest of you, but mystery meat with fake grill marks will always have a special place in my heart.
