After we broke the news yesterday of Whole Foods’ decision to go ahead with plans to build on a contaminated lot in Gowanus, Crain’s followed up half an hour later with a story of its own. And while neglecting to give our post a hat-tip, the business paper did come up with some interesting original content: This rendering. Neato.

  1. I’m not a big fan of Brownstoners anti-everything (but 150yr old housing) agenda but man Englishkills you win the over-the-top bitterness award.

The guy built a great and popular website (i.e. a business) and then went on to create a very successful flea market (another business) – both of which are big community resources. Not sure what your great achievements and contributions are but Brownstoner certainly has my respect and admiration.

Next time look in the mirror before you piss in someone elses cherrios – my guess the reflection back wont be one that justifies all the indignation.

  2. Enough about wages and the treatment of employees, please!

WE ALL patronize the restaurants – who’s back there scraping our damn dishes? Illegals who do not make minimum wage.

  3. “Not even Target or Kmart have the market share to demand the prices that Walmart can. It’s pretty scary when you think about how those low prices impact manufacturers and suppliers.”

yeah – you’re the only one who’s really touched on the reason why wal-mart is bad. their control over the supply chain would cause lots of jobs to be shipped over seas by suppliers, i imagine.

but hey, that’s the free market.

  4. “Wal-Mart is just bigger.”

This is precisely why I find the focus on wages short sighted. Because of their size they’re able to demand ridiculously low wholesale prices. Not even Target or Kmart have the market share to demand the prices that Walmart can. It’s pretty scary when you think about how those low prices impact manufacturers and suppliers.

  5. Brownstoner,

So you fancy yourself a member of the media now? That’s a laugh. Sit around copying and pasting links all day from actual newspapers and you feel you deserve to be included amongst reputable publications that actually put in work and report the news? Your site offers absolutely nothing of value in terms of news and only exists to help your boyhood UES Manhattan pals sell overpriced real estate.

Go to school, work hard, and get a real job if it’s respect and recognition you crave. Or at least hire writers who know how to formulate sentences. Posting links to other people’s work does not make you part of the media. You write a blog and you run a dirty flea market. You’re no different than the other 100,000 yuppies who’ve moved to Brooklyn in the past decade. You’re quite far from being part of the media elite in this town.

    Keep up the good work.

  6. I never understood the hatred of Wal-Mart from people who will shop at (or at least accept) Target, KMart, Home Depot, or Lowes.

They are all the same in how they treat their workers and where they source their goods from.

    Wal-Mart is just bigger.

I would still guess that they all treat their employees better than the average mom-and-pop.

  7. Walmart is evil in many respects, but on the positive side: they’ve sold a ton of CFLs for cheap; they sell mail order generic drugs for $10 for a 3 month supply; they’ve got a reasonably priced family cell phone plan with unlimited talk & text. Those things help regular folks save some energy and save some money, so they’ll have more left over for their fancy cocktail tab.

  8. quote:
Blame the import of cheap goods from China into this country and the mindset of Americans that the more they have the better off they are.
It’s a vicious cycle of supply for a false demand.

yep. just look at people who just have to have a new phone like every two months :-/
