After we broke the news yesterday of Whole Foods’ decision to go ahead with plans to build on a contaminated lot in Gowanus, Crain’s followed up half an hour later with a story of its own. And while neglecting to give our post a hat-tip, the business paper did come up with some interesting original content: This rendering. Neato.

  1. Globalist Perspective:

American consumerism is fueling China’s growth, improving their standard of living and their increased role in international affairs.
All at the expense of American hegemony.

    Conclusion:
Fear not, a lower standard of living awaits all Americans.

  2. Blame the import of cheap goods from China into this country and the mindset of Americans that the more they have the better off they are.
It’s a vicious cycle of supply for a false demand.

  3. …wait a minute,
wasn’t Obamacare supposed to fix this “problem” of
people not having access to healthcare?

I hope you guys aren’t telling me we’re spending a trillion to insure the uninsured and we’re still gonna have to hear about the “uninsured crisis”.

  4. “They exacerbate it. ”

okay cool – so mom and pop stores are okay if they pay shit wages (man’s gotta get his fair trade organic coffee and biodynamic wine, nah mean?)

anti wal-mart people in NYC are such hypocrites it’s not even funny.

  5. I don’t dispute that Walmart would do very well in that location. Rather that all of the negatives associated with big box retailers are amplified with a Walmart.
But I guess convenient access to buy cheap shit trumps any urbanistic goals.
For those advocating housing; to make economic sense with housing on this site you’re talking about development with the kind of density that Toll Brothers is/was proposing a few blocks away.
