288-7th-garage.jpgThis place at 288 7th Street is one of the odder building designs we’ve seen in a long time. Clearly the owner (or architect) had some good intentions to try to convert the former two-story commercial building into some sort of period-appropriate residential structure. The result, however, is just plain weird, with massing and proportions that don’t really work in our opinion and an overall look that’s more Disney than Old New York. And even if the facade were more successful, the tall rear addition would have been a spoiler anyway. This is an instance where the developer would have benefited from having some input from the folks at LPC! According to a sign out front, Brown Harris Stevens is now marketing the converted building as duplex condos, although we couldn’t find any online listings. GMAP P*Shark DOB

  1. DH, honestly you’ve been looking at crap too long in Williamsburg if you can’t tell the difference between quality brickwork and crap. Granted I’ve seen the place in person and am not making a judgment by the photo only, but yes…this is very high quality brickwork compared to a lot of stuff out there.

  2. are you guys serious? brickwork looks no better than any other new construction POS that gets panned here on a daily basis. just bc it has an oddly placed cornice and some faux-casement windows all of a sudden it looks like ‘quality work’? – y’all crazy.

  3. too much brick between first and second floors.
sorry, Brooklyn is a city with very sophisticated historic architecture. The old buildings set the bar quite high in terms of good design.
It is easier to get away with amateurish work in a boondock town or a brand-new burb where there is little else of quality to compete with.

  4. re: how it used to look…we would have preferred to see the original two-story building preserved and then topped with a glassy, modern addition rather than have the whole thing remade into a period piece.
