What a difference two years makes! The owners of 426 Waverly Avenue purchased the aesthetically-challenged structure back in September 2007 for $1,166,000 and set about restoring it to its original glory. And what a job they’ve done! Hip, hip, hooray! GMAP DOB

  1. Looks wonderful. Gets my first (very) unofficial “Monty” award for a real restoration.

I have no problem with old style canvas awnings. They were ahead of their time in green cooling. But like Dave said, “Fiberama, not so much”.

  2. I used to put up my grandmothers canvas awnings every spring. ( not on brownstone but an upstate house). People did know how to keep things cooler without a/c.
Everything was closed up during day (windows/blinds) with fans going and late at night until early a.m. opened to let cooler night air in. Try to make cross ventilation.
I don’t hate NJ at all, Rob. Just saying sometimes we like things because remind us of simpler place and time. And the old look did look well maintained in that photo.

why is it so outlandish that some people have different aesthetic taste? jeez. sorry i dont go gaga over the generic thing i see on the right. i mean there’s nothing wrong with the new version, but you have to admit it’s pretty bland and doesnt really have any character. sometimes new stuff made to LOOK old just winds up looking silly and more out of place than a glass box even!

um. don’t be a jersey hater.

“And where did you hear awnings back in style” the psychic part of my brain says so!

  5. Actually, cloth awnings were a fixture on most brownstones in BK up until the 50’s. I don’t dislike the cloth awning look, but I find those metal ones to be really ugly, not to mention that they age horribly.
