Despite the recent victory of Atlantic Yards opponents in court, the first steel girders have risen above the construction fence at the corner of Atlantic and Flatbush. Plenty of news outlets reported this morning that the stadium, which is expected to be done summer 2012, is beginning to “take on [its] iconic shape,” in the words of Bruce Rater. Construction is supposed to move steadily over the next few months, despite the concern from DDDB legal director Candace Carpenter, who says They are rushing to get as much in the ground as they can before we seek a stay from the court. Atlantic Yards Report says a construction stay is unlikely, as it wasn’t part of the ruling earlier this month.

Steel Goes Up, DDDB Will Seek Stay on Construction [AY Report]
“despite the concern from DDDB legal director Candace Carpenter, who says “They are rushing to get as much in the ground as they can before we seek a stay from the court.â€
Candace Carpenter is no doubt a construction expert, well versed in the strategies and timing of large scale building construction.
I think a stay is highly unlikely given Judge Friedman’s decision against ESDC, requiring the state authority to provide a “detailed, reasoned basis for [its] findings.” ESDC will produce what it has to and the project will keep moving forward, without any regard for how much construction is completed.
And in case anyone thinks the statement above condones the project or the process, check out this witty Thanskgiving card from the folks at DDDB:

haha – chuck just got pwned. nimbys suck
I live in the ‘surrounding’ community and I want it. That whole strip from Atlantic Ave to Pacific St was a corridor of eye sores. As they complete the master plan, it is only going to help property values in the area, plus add some nice places to shop and eat that are within walking distance.
I’m 2 blocks away, and at this point I want it to be finished and open.
Please don’t keep up the claim that preservationists-at-all-costs, loud mouthed busy-bodies, anti-corporation liberals, and entitled drivers speak for the entire community.
This is not something I ever hear people in my building complaining about.
…begins to “take on its iconic stink” I think he meant.
Fight fight fight.
There is no end to the support DDDB has. No one in the surrounding communities wants this thing. They can always fill the hole with those granite sarcophagi from in front of the LIRR station.
“They are rushing to get as much in the ground as they can before we seek a stay from the court.â€
Excellent strategy by FCR, taken right from Robert Moses’ playbook. Well done.
As BHS states above, let DDB fight for an abandoned steel skeleton as a “victory”.
Did Beyonce just walk by?

Will DDDB ever give up?
They fought a good fight, and they lost. They need to get over it.
I guess they would rather see an abandoned construction sight there – that will really do great things for the area.
