Despite the recent victory of Atlantic Yards opponents in court, the first steel girders have risen above the construction fence at the corner of Atlantic and Flatbush. Plenty of news outlets reported this morning that the stadium, which is expected to be done summer 2012, is beginning to “take on [its] iconic shape,” in the words of Bruce Rater. Construction is supposed to move steadily over the next few months, despite the concern from DDDB legal director Candace Carpenter, who says They are rushing to get as much in the ground as they can before we seek a stay from the court. Atlantic Yards Report says a construction stay is unlikely, as it wasn’t part of the ruling earlier this month.

  1. I nominate TheDude for the most politically incorrect post of the week – and that’s AFTER he used the term “native american”

Ditmas – there is only 1 arena in NYC, hardly a statistical sample.

  2. I took a quick peek at AAA in Dallas via Google Maps.

One big apparent difference is the siting of the arena. It is nestled in between what appears to be downtown highrises and a lowrise industrial area. Not, as AY will be, smack in the middle of several residential neighborhoods.

  3. ditmassnark – ever been to the American Airlines Arena in Dallas? That area was a complete dump before they built it. It, along with the associated development, spurred a complete revamp of the whole area there. This development is of the same caliber. Stop thinking about the crappy stadiums from the 70’s and 80’s and start understanding the modern complex.

As for the 2035 comment, that’s the plan for now, but as the economy recovers, you can bet that timetable will be moved up. Money talks, and there will be plenty to be made.

  4. I am a home owner that live approximately 2 blocks from the AY. I fully support the AY and can’t wait until it is complete and the whole area is gentrified. Keep it going Ratner. We are all behind you.

It is funny how opponents keep claiming that no one wants the AY. All my neighbors want this place and that makes me wonder who are the DDDB members and what is the real reason behind their fight. Please stop your fight and let us enjoy the long awaited improvements taking place in our area.

  5. the stink on this project grows by the day.

i am all for boycotting the nets when they get here.

and please dont give FCR the street cred of taking anything from the robert moses playbook. incompetent boobs propped up by the vestiges of a ridiculous real estate run up. only surviving because of the willful ignorance of state and city officials as well as the judiciary. all had the opportunity to kill this thing. all figured brooklyn didn’t have the fight in them to organize cohesively en masse.

brooklyn has been played and looks the fool right now. and no amount of high rise dwellers will remove that perception anytime soon.

  6. Last I heard this is slated to be completed in 2035. Only the arena will be done in 2012. It will be a construction pit until well into my retirement.

But I agree that people should stop complaining and fighting it. It’s like the Native Americans…Andrew Jackson blah blah blah. You lost already. What is white takes right. Get over it and move on already.
