This morning the Brooklyn Paper provided details for a possible hotel on Prospect Avenue between 5th and 6th Avenues. The Grand Prospect Hall, at 263 Prospect Ave., wants to construct a 150-room, 11-story hotel and a 400-space garage in addition to its banquet hall. Because the area’s zoning rules cap buildings at six stories, the developer will need city approval. And although the expansion has the support of Councilmember Brad Lander, some residents worry it could be a traffic nightmare. But as of yet, the time frame of construction, costs and funding have not been made public. There will be a public hearing on the hotel to Community Board 7 tomorrow at 6:30pm, at 575 5th Avenue. Clarification: Councilman Lander has not voiced his support of the project; rather, according to a spokesperson, “The Councilmember’s position is that he supports Grand Prospect Hall’s going to the Community Board and supports the transparency of the project, and that he wants to hear more about it.”

  1. Not sure why all the hate for the Grand Prospect Hall. It was built in the late 1800’s. I’m sure the interior is from then. The same people on here that sing praises for preservation are knocking this place for doing just that.

Montrose, maybe a write-up is required on this place.

  2. Not sure about the demand, but if there were ever a site that could handle a hotel, this would be it. They have tons of unbuilt lot space there, there is parking, and as noted, this is a busy road that is a service road to the prospect expressway. Would actually be amazing if someone with hotel experience were thinking of redeveloping the whole property-

  3. Am I missing something? It’s on the prospect expressway service road – not exactly a street that’s suddenly going to get ruined by a development causing a traffic nightmare.

  4. BH – omg I am dying
my husband and I looked at this place for our wedding 3 years ago b/c I honestly had no idea that it was “THAT TACKY”
oh good god – I was amazed by the gold, pink and blue detailing.
they also were quite impressed with telling us that Al Capone drank there and shot someone dead
that’s a fun tidbit to share with your guests at your wedding – I suppose????????

  5. Funny, the owners of The Grand Prospect Hall actually were very helpful in assisting with the recent SSlope downzoning…

Eleven stories is going to cast a mighty big shadow across the rear of Suite Sixteen, the newish condo building. Karma’s a bitch.
