Actually I remember it differently. It’s the public who pays for the yellow school buses vi taxes, not people- that’s how it;s done in Long Island at least
IF everyone in the state would JUST agree to a voluntary tax of $5 a month to NYS for the year we would have an added revenue stream that would help reduce the budget
and yes I agree the CITY should pay for kids (through our taxes) to ride the trains free for school transport
why is that so hard
Students in the suburbs who ride the yellow bus have to pay a fee for that. The only people who get free rides are students who are actually POOR and cannot afford to pay. This is the only place I know of that hands out a metro card to almost every public school student. Students need to show proof of being “poor” before they get a free ride.
Rob,
I agree students should’nt have to pay to get to school, but why does the MTA have to be the entity that shoulders the cost? It is an expense that has to do with the Department of ED, not transit. In the suburbs the schools pay for busing, they dont make the town buses or greyhound let kids ride for free. Its just a way of shifting costs to less transparent venues.
As far as property tax goes, in case you havent noticed we pay the highest combined State and City income tax in the country – about to go higher. That is part of the reason property taxes are so low. If they need to raise property taxes too, then what the hell are they doing with my income taxes? BTW rents would also skyrocket…
If this were your average suburb, students would ride to school on a yellow bus. Now THAT is expensive!
also maybe if the kids had to actually pay out of pocket for the student metrocards they wouldnt leave their litter everywhere, curse and scream at each like wild elephants, and intimidate paying passengers? nah, never happen hahaha.
when people get stuff for free they tend not to take care of it and take advantage of it, and learn very early on that they are entitled to hand outs.
but still students really shouldnt have to pay to get to school.. maybe they should just raise property taxes to normal levels!? surely chad and darcy who just bought a 3 million dollar brownstone in cobble hill can foot an extra few thousand dollars a year to spread the wealth among nyc children right? oh that’s right, it’s the working schlubs who always have to foot the bill in this town thru insane banana taxes!

Econ 101 fail, rf.
i like the nyt but benson is right. i used to work for former federal prosecutors who talked about how their bosses would regularly read all the ny tabloids, but particularly the Post, to make sure the feds were investigating potential crimes within their jurisdiction.
It’s not like the city runs extra trains and buses for school kids! student metrocards don’t cost anything.
i think mta employees are just compensated for having to p up with so many new yorkers on a constant basis. could you imagine if you had to spend hour hours dealing with people taking public transportation for 30 years? sorry but id probably shoot myself in the face after 2 days. so they make a decent liveable wage and they get to retire early. big woop. jealousy is a disease.
but yes GRRRRRRR at the price increase, that sucks. but 100 bux for a months worth of public transportation is still a good deal when you think about it.
and yes kids should get free monthly cards. but to go to school. they should have to reswipe them once they get to school to to make sure that’s where the money is going. cuz so many just dont go to school and use their metrocards to come loiter all day in soho. if their card is swiped and then not swiped a few hours later IN SCHOOL, then a bill should be sent to their parents. draconian? yes. a good plan? very. this way the department of education could chip in to their free metrocards as the metrocard swipe would be a more thorough way of taking attendance and would give more time for instruction instead of wasting it taking attendance.
