Haven’t been inside in a while, but doesn’t this place look better in red?
Five Guys Burgers in Park Slope: Hot or Not?
Says one Chowhound: “I was walking past the corner of 7th Ave and 6th street (where that ugly Bank of America is going in) and I saw a work permit on the space next door (the old D’Agostino’s) that says a Five Guys is going in. Yea!”
But another replies: “Or is it another nail in the coffin for the charm of Park Slope?”
Opening and Closing Report
According to Eater, Jesse’s Brooklyn Kitchen will be closing shop on Smith Street, and Manhattan’s Cheyenne Diner will reopen in Red Hook, but Red Hook’s 360 is officially gone for good.
After the jump: Luz turns out the lights for Earth Day (and today), bargains at Barrio, and Andrea Strong’s move to Brooklyn…
Luz, Sin Luz
177 Vanderbilt Avenue, Fort Greene
“On April 22 and 23 we will be selecting, measuring and combining organic and sustainable products to produce a meal without electric power. We will be using all natural, organic and grass fed products from local farms and markets. We will also be serving organic beer and wine. There will be no electricity, no telephones, no gas, no credit card machines, no computers, and no heat lamps.” [Green Brooklyn]
Barrio’s Opening Bargain
210 Seventh Avenue (at Third Street), Park Slope; (718) 965-4000
“Spencer Rothschild opened this Mexican place in his own neighborhood on Monday. There will be a 15 percent discount through April 30.” [NY Times]
Andrea Strong Moves to Brooklyn, Reviews the Grocery, Admires the Locals
288 Smith Street, Carroll Gardens; (718) 596-3335
“While three appetizers were a lot, we couldn’t resist a grilled calamari, so we didn’t. We shared it as a mid-course. Thin, wonderfully chewy and charred ringlets are tossed with sweet and hot long peppers, roasted and pickled cauliflower, and giant cannellini beans (so lustrous they almost looked like little poached eggs) from Rancho Gordo in a dill and tarragon dressing… The room was now filled, and Diana was looking around, smiling. ‘Brooklyn people are so cute,’ she said, sweeping a piece of soft crusty bread through the last of the dill dressing.” [The Strong Buzz]
I’ve been to Angry Wade’s a number of times. The bartenders are fun, the crowd is eclectic, the music is great! I’ve never had a bad time!
Yes, I’ve been there when there is a bay ridge crowd. And when there are “gangsters.” And when there are hipsters. And teachers. And young 20-somethings. And chill 30-somethings.
I’d go to Angry Wade’s 1000 times over before I went to a bar that was always a certain “scene.”
Goodness, the other comments are so hateful and judgmental!
I lived next to Angry Wades for years. The 4am crowd is loud, and … angry. What an awful, angry place.
Boerum Hill Food Company is closing for dinner in the winter – business was slow that time of day. They are likely to reopen for dinner hours when the weather warms up.
Thanks 10:17, I didn’t end up making it out there last night, but will also take note of Barbes, Farm and Habana Outpost. Hopefully tonight or tomorrow night.
Wow, I can’t believe Great Lakes is mentioned as a bar to go to in PS. No offense to the poster, but I’ve never had a good time there. The ambiance is horrible. UH, too, a little too pretentious for me.
If you want character, go to Barbes on 9th St/6th Ave. Farm on Flatbush/6th Ave is ok too esp with the outdoor season upon us. Speaking of outdoor, Habana Outpost is one of the coolest places in Brooklyn (Fulton Ave/Portland St).
im friends with several green bay fans and we always seem to end up at Angry Wades b/c its the only place that plays the games. Never been there when it wasnt a game night tho.
also go to Black Sheep on 5th and Bergen or Freddy’s on 6th and Dean (not park slope but whatever)
12:08 here
last 2x i was in wades it was 1/2 filled with young bay ridge transplants wearing turtle necks and leather jackets – with gotti kids spiked hair (other 1/2 yes, being aforementioned green bay fans).
maybe that element has moved on – but either way.. i agree.. it’s a shitty bar.
does anyone know why boerum hill food company has been closing so much earlier lately? it only seems to be open in the morning and by evening when i return home from work (6:30ish) it is closed
Thanks 4:32. I looked it up and must admit I like the sounds of the review that noted, “travel back in time to a place when dive bars weren’t hip and political correctness wasn’t part of the venacular.”
Union Hall and Great Lakes also look good. I’ll definitely check them all out.
