A reader sent in this pic on Friday showing how Two Toms, the old-school Italian restaurant on 3rd Avenue near Union, had been closed by the Department of Health. According to DOH records—click through to see them—it was originally closed last Wednesday for a bunch of citations saying it was unsanitary and then re-closed on Friday for lingering “critical” violations: “Evidence of mice or live mice present in facility’s food and/or non-food areas” and “Live roaches present in facility’s food and/or non-food areas.” GMAP
We tried to go there Saturday night and found it closed. We ended up eating at the bar at the top of Hotel Le Bleu and it was surprisingly good.
I’m amazed they got a citation – it was filled w/ wise guys every time I went there – [full] holsters on their ankles, etc.
We used to go there to enjoy eating where supposedly the mob guys ate. The decor had the atmosphere of a Chinese Take-out joint! However they served giant portions home-style (which is one big bowl of pasta for instance that everyone was served from) and the food was quite good. The pork-chops (in particular) were amazing! My wife once ordered them and was asked to describe with her hands how “big” she wanted it. The chop she received was gigantic, bigger than any I’d seen in my life and still stands out in my memory to this day. But the food wasn’t so good that you had to go back for more, no matter what.
I’ve always wanted to try that joint. Now, no more.
