A much loved Bay Ridge pizza parlor is bringing its thin-crust formula to 5th Avenue. The owners of 77th Street’s Peppino’s are opening a restaurant on 5th between 10th and 11th streets, in a storefront that’s currently being gutted. Could mean that the South Slope is about to give places like Franny’s and Peperoncino a run for their money. GMAP

  1. I think this place is probably far enough away from Franny’s (on Flatbush) not to hurt it–which is a shame, since I think Franny’s is one of the most overrated new restaurants in the neighborhood recently. It’s not bad, it’s just extremely so-so, and totally not worth the prices (even if it is mostly organic or local), or all the good reviews they seem to get. The pizza is really mediocre.

In the Slope, La Villa’s pizza is really good (or at least was–haven’t been there in a couple years). And since we’re talking on the subject, Caserta Vecchia on Smith St. also does good brick-oven pizzas!

  2. psyched about this. i loathe peperencino’s though, ever since the time i got a corn salad there made of canned corn. gross. i’d think la villa – which i adore – would be more worried, but it’s still a long way away.
