A new sweet shop is moving into the old Firefly space on 7th Avenue. It’s called the King of Cupcakes, and according to their website, they’ll be serving cupcakes, cookies, custom cakes, pies, pastries, bagels, gelato, “and the best damn coffee in Brooklyn.” They also claim that they’ve been serving “fresh baked goods since 1979,” and it seems that their original shop is located inside a pizzeria in Chelsea. Anybody know the backstory on this place? GMAP

  1. “Cupcakes are this year’s frozen yogurt.”

We had 2 cupcake shops in the town I grew up in. That was 30 years ago. Some people are just sensitive about trends. There are all of TWO Magnolia cupcake bakeries in the city. A handful of Crumbs Bakeries and a few others. This is THE FIRST cupcake shop in Park Slope, not 10th.

Where is outrage over the 500 Starbucks?

  2. Rob – gimme one example of a CUPCAKE place in Park Slope?
    NONE – trust me!

sure there are all these cafes and bakeries but none really focus on good cupcakes that sorta taste like duncan hines but not as chemical (obviously)

I hope this place doesn’t do all the “artisanal” variety cupcake BS and just focuses on regular flavors that will appeal to more people than 30 year old frou frous. You can have the odd flavors but please come with vanilla/vanilla 🙂

Agree cupcakes are universal and everyone loves a cupcake.

I just find the marketing strange – the name – King Of Cupcakes and the poster of the kid don’t make sense to me and that it originally operated out of a pizzeria in Chelsea – weird

  3. If they do delivery directly to classrooms, they’ll be very successful. There’s nothing I hate more than trying to navigate the delivery of 30 cupcakes to school, just so each child can lick off the frosting and throw the rest away.
