Six storefront business on a ten-block stretch of Nostrand Avenue in Crown Heights yesterday were busted for selling drugs yesterday in a raid by NYPD; most of the contraband was marijuana with a little cocaine thrown into the mix for good measure. It was an open drug bazaar on Nostrand Avenue, said Councilwoman Letitia James The businesses involved included Chris Restaurant, Press Play CD King, D & Z Variety, though it’s believed that they were all operating independently. At lunch it turned into a veritable pot-luck event, said Police Commissioner Ray Kelly. You could go in and get drugs in the food itself or go to the back of the store and pick it up or even buy it over the counter. Eight individuals were arrested, though if last year’s drug bust on Putnam and Grand is any indication, the businesses will probably be back up and running in no time. Absurd.

Ty, I think that deli on Cortelyou right by Fire Department Station has something something shady going on there….. Not sure myself though as I never bought so I guess you’ll have to figure it out for yourself.
My bag has never been searched in the subway… and once (very recently) I discovered I had inadvertently carried a large swiss army knife onto a plane.
*rob* — I’m not surprised you’ve been searched. Wandering around confused, stoned off your ass, calling out randomly in the subway tunnels for DIBS to do your taxes…. it’s the duty of the police to at least give you a once over. 🙂

I’m sure the police could do a raid in a number of neighborhoods, including tonier ones than this, and come up with people selling drugs out of storefronts, so it’s not like it was invented here.
no one was attacking crown heights and no one is claiming drug sales were invented in crown heights :-/
and besides can’t you buy even harder drugs in basically every bathroom in williamsburg!?

The people of Crown Heights North have been complaining for years, so it’s about time. I actually don’t even go to Nostrand Ave all that much, especially up where this happened, so I don’t even recognize the names of the stores. I’m sure the police could do a raid in a number of neighborhoods, including tonier ones than this, and come up with people selling drugs out of storefronts, so it’s not like it was invented here. That said, I’m glad to see some concerted law enforcement going down. Our main commercial strip deserves better than what we have now. There are some old, new and good businesses trying to survive on Nostrand, and if we want more, we have to lose the reputation of being either drug or crime central.
UM NO! the government should NOT legalize it just to tax it. things are taxed enough as it is!!!! part of the fun of smoking weed IS that it’s illegal.
*rob*
ENY — can you share some of those? 🙂
Oh oh. Now there are only 5,684 places left in NYC where someone can buy weed.
“Philadelphia just decriminalized any amount under an ounce. it’s no longer a misdemeaner and a criminal record, just a fine.”
Same here – for possession. Cops like to try to trick you into giving it to them during stop and frisks. As soon as you take it out of your pocket, it’s in plain site – and a misdemeanor (or that’s how i understand it at least)
