J.Mclaughlin, which has been outfitting preppies on the Upper East Side for years from its Third Avenue store, made its first inroads to Brooklyn last week with the opening of a new shop at 218 Hicks Streets in Brooklyn Heights. Evidently the company’s creative director fell in love with the neighborhood and thought it was underserved in the clothing department. The vibrant, charming and historic community of Brooklyn Heights felt like the perfect fit for us. We saw a apparent disconnect in the area which is filled with stylish consumers but few appropriate retail spaces, so when something became available on Hicks Street we jumped at the chance to open a new store, Kevin McLaughlin said.

Do preppies really put pennies in their penny loafers?”
Once when I was in middle school and was a little short, this guy gave me the nickels out of his loafers so I would have bus fare. I don’t know if he qualified as preppy, but to this day he is my image of human kindness.
“I say bring back jean cut off short shorts.” – have you been to williamsburg recently? 🙂
“There was always someone though who did, and it was kind of like they knew it was funny and tacky, but they couldn’t help themselves.”
So true, slopenick, though I found that more often than not the person (people) who wore the over the top preppy clothes were the only ones who DIDN’T get the joke.
I never had the rope bracelet, but I still have the Bean duck boats AND the blue Norwegian sweater with white squares (must be on my 3rd by now).
LMAO Minard and ENY. Minard is in a funny mood today.
“stylish, brooklyn heights and that store are three things that have never and shouldn’t ever meet. ”
Why not? I would say as a whole people in Brooklyn Heights dress pretty well – much better then some other Brownstone Brooklyn neighborhoods with a bunch of boutiques.
I just looked at the website – pretty standard preppy summer clothing (ie, the ‘ready for a spontaneous yacht party at all times’ look), you could pretty much find the same stuff at J. Crew for 20% less. I think that fits the Brooklyn Heights demographic pretty well – as they all seem to pack up and go somewhere else during the summer.
Minard – where do the gentry summer nowadays?
CGAR — you are correct about the Sperry Topsiders, but everyone I knew called them docksiders, and they did NOT mean the Sebago rip offs.
I didn’t wear those clothes either and not many people I knew did. There was always someone though who did, and it was kind of like they knew it was funny and tacky, but they couldn’t help themselves.
Girls had to have those white turtleneck shirts with prints on them of whales or something, and everyone had to have that blue LL Bean sweater with the white squares. If you want a true prepster store, you either have Orvis or Brooks Bros.
I’m sure you had one of those rope bracelets that shrink around your wrist and LL Bean boots in the winter, didn’t you?
Actually, wasder, back in the day, yes, at least in Bass Weejuns.

LOL, ENY.
