  1. lech, a columinist of the nytimes did this last year and wrote an article about it in nytimes mag, the reactions were wild. Instead of central america, she used a girl from PA.

don’t have a problem with it, but seems like take-out to me.

  2. Pete, sounds about right. My friend’s family has been there forever. And Rob, you are right, totally, utterly, moonface proof. Compete lack of cool. Which of course, makes it kind of cool. I like it in a way. I love the port. It is like a special moonscape at night with all the container ships coming in completely lit up. And the main drag, Broadway, has these amazingly retro curved, Art Deco store fronts. It’s the 1950s. My grandfather worked for the Bayway refinery there; my father too for a while. It’s spitting distance from Western S.I.

  3. BHS, actually they aren’t even close to upper class. He does criminal defense work and she is a stand up comic. They live in a modest place in the Bronx.

This is real prioritizing of funds for them.

  4. I know of the possibility of doing this. There have been surrogates in South Asia (I forget whether Bangladesh or India) for a while; now in Guatemala. I think it’s disgusting but what do I know, now that it’s not so easy to get a baby girl from China? I agree with Biff, with friends like that…
