  1. “It’s about turning on the TV and not seeing yourself represented as a functional part of American society. It’s not about seeing the space shuttle or men on the moon.”

As a child in JA this was not an issue for me. Any way, our programming mostly came from England, so there was no expectaion of seeing people of color. TV was not part of our routine. We did not have one in the house. There was one at the school. The community would come to watch major events like the moon landing. While we do have issues or race and class (mostly class) in Jamaica, I was socialized in an environment were I did not need to see myself reflected on TV. We had a Black (Very dark skinned)Prime minister, our doctors, lawyers, teachers, etc were black.

I do understand the issue of blacks and people of color not being represented as functional parts of American society. And eventhough this has changed since the early days of TV and movies, people of color are still marginalized in movies and television

donatella- I was kidding around with benson. Maybe you should stop jumping up to defend what doesn’t need to be. or get a sense of humor

    oh, ok.

  3. exptext>They sell a box and you can cheat but it’s not the same tasting. I learned to make it from scratch from…

oops, did not register. guess i won’t be inviting you to my makeshift Indian dinners!

  4. We didn’t have tv for a lot of my childhood, and I longed for it with an ache that was completely out of proportion to what I was missing.

My kids watch a lot of tv.

I know a lot of parents who boast that their kids don’t watch tv or that that they don’t have a tv, and then you go to their house and little Ricky sits there watching 2 hours of tv. What gives? Oh, but it’s not TELEVISION, it’s streaming netflix or a dvd on the laptop or, worse, a movie on their iphone. This makes no sense to me, but I guess I’ll join in on their pompous attitude bcs other than baseball, my kids watch NO TV! (but spend an hour and half everyday with shows on demand, streaming netflix, or a DVD movie)

benson- my father (life long Democrat that he was) would still have loved you. My mother would have loved the fact that you’re successful. My sister would like you only if I say to and my brother would tell you to point your toes while he hammered you into the ground (He’s quite tall) 😉

wow. I started to read this with a smile on my face thinking you were actually being nice to Benson. Oh well.

  6. exptext: Indian cooking need not always be complicated. Puri and desserts are a pain, but not other breads, stews and stir-fry curries. You don’t really need to make garam masala and other mixed spices by hand with an artisanal blender, store bought is fine.

I make a full meal in 20 mins (work time). It cooks itself mostly. My son approves but I might not invite traditionalist Indians to sample it…

  7. True story. My wife’s grandmother (old Italian lady from the other side) immediately said, upon setting sight on me for the first time, “I love you”.

Ask my wife about it at the next meet-up.
