As many films as he made he often went long periods without work and took roles he didn’t like because of that very dynamic. In 60s he started seeking roles to break out a little. He was very frustrated to be out there alone for so long as teh only leading black male — felt every role he played he had to carry too much baggage. The scene in Heat of the Night in which he slaps the white local sheriff was a major cultural moment. Heat of the Night was developed as a film that could make money without showing in south.
My big non-TV years were in Japan. It was really good for me; I realized that we live in a huge media bath here which lulls you into thinking that you really know what is going on, that you are informed.
They had an NHK news loop which I would watch because in 15 minutes I would hear the same things again (like NY1) but other than that, nothing. (lots of porn on at night on regular TV which was different).
I really needed to organize my thoughts in English because I worked with no Americans and whatever English was spoken was pretty bad. So at night I came home and read. Books, magazines in English and got into the habit of getting news from the Economist. This was pre-Internet. I got my news from Reuters during the day but read a lot at night.
That was good for me.
