“I’m not sure how you measure social cohesion, but I’m not convinced it’s lower now vs most of the past 100-150 years.”
Etson;
I would recommend that you read the famous book that came out about 10 years ago, entitled “Bowling Alone”. It examines this topic thoroughly and makes a convincing case on the fraying of our social cohesion.
The title refers to the fact that many people used to bowl in leagues as a form of entertainment and socializing, but that now most folks go it alone, or in much smaller groups.
But not really. Except for politics and preservation, I find I agree with quite a few things benson says. What I said was true- my dad would have liked him (he was curmudgeonly too:). Now let’s see if donatella has a cow for me calling both of them curmudgeons.

Hi CGar, yes, I would say that as a topic, it is pretty much played out, but Brownstoner seems to think this is fascinating stuff. And apparantly some regulars can’t get enough of it too. I put bike threads in the same category as the person who quit as Alaskan governor. Enough already.

I remember reading the description of Survivor back in 2000 and thinking it sounded like a lawsuit:
“CBS plans to strand 20 people on a remote island and see who can last the longest.”
“I put bike threads in the same category as the person who quit as Alaskan governor.”
Who might that be donatella? ;o)
Oh it was agonizing, biff 😉

I saw that one once. Thought it was good.

if one is given a choice, much much better to be on Amazing Race than survivor – especially since they both award winner $1M
