  1. I think there’s probably more social cohesion today given Twitter, FB, etc. It may appear different because mass communications make us more aware of there being other groups than we were before. Yes, there were some forces for communal unity such as t.v. & magazines but even those were actually quite culturally parochial.

  2. I don’t doubt there are some times that would have shown greater cohesion, benson. Just thinking that they may not be that representative of a broader swath of history.
    Much of the cohesion in the mid 20th century likely was related to the needs / after effects of fighting two world wars.
    The inter-war years don’t seem so cohesive, nor those immediately prior to WWI, nor the late 1960’s in the cities….

  3. I remember reading the description of Survivor back in 2000 and thinking it sounded like a lawsuit:

    “CBS plans to strand 20 people on a remote island and see who can last the longest.”

    Sounds like manhattan.
