  1. Atriss, you do not speak for me or anyone else that I know. I am black. I have a black wife. And I have black children. More importantly, I serve on the community group that assisted in the closing of the hotel. The group is 100% black and we do not want this type of establishment in our community. Period. We are not talking about razing housing projects, or displacing the poor or people of color. We are talking about closing down a drug and prostitution den in a residential community. The drug dealers are not from Lefferts Place. The drug addicts are not from Lefferts Place. The pimps and prostitutes are not from Lefferts Place. The Johns are not from Lefferts Place. The hotel owner is not from Lefferts Place. Who are you or anyone else on this board to tell the hard working families of Lefferts Place that they must tolerate a flop house on their block simply to maintain an “urban edge” to the community?!? Are you kidding me?!? Have we gone mad?!?!

  2. there’s definitely some good information on this site when one finds oneself in the market for a rowhouse, but i’ve got to say, a lot of you people on here are just straight up clowns.

  3. Atriss,

The Dutch model is not a good example given that the “trade” in Amstersdam is government regulated and, accordingly, government sanctioned. That is why it is in open air (well, behind windows at least) in Amsterdam.

Obviously in the case of the Lefferts Hotel, the opposite holds. To that end, how am I a “busybody” if I simply wish to close down an illegal establishment?

  4. there are gorgeous rowhouses in amsterdam as well, many of which are even nicer than the ones in clinton hill. drugs and prostitution are also prevelant in the area, by the way. however, in some inexplicable way, the mostly white, well-educated, cosmopolitan, child-rearing occupants of these meticulouly well-maintained residences are able to rear their children succesfully and enjoy a pleasant bohemian/bourgeouis existence in spite of all this hardship.

drugs and prostitution are facts of life, urban life especially. if you don’t want to participate, you don’t have to. but you don’t need to be a busybody and change the way everybody around you lives. its called tolerance and the dutch provide a good example of this concept.
