Although the 77th Precinct maintains a map detailing the locations of recent crimes, no such visual rendering is available online. Some folks on Brooklynian’s Prospect Heights message board are trying to change that. They’ve set up a map that allows anyone to report muggings or other violent incidents in the neighborhood, and they’ve also added data from published crime reports. Seems like a great community resource, though you have to wonder how many inaccurate or overblown reports are going to find their way into the mix. Nevertheless, neat stuff.

Is PH really considered that dangerous (say compared to FG or CH)? We were seriously considering buying there. (On Carlton and St Marks.) Currently we live in FG on Myrtle and Clermont (going on our 6th year) and have never had any issues, so would love to know what to expect in PH. Thanks!

Prospect Park West used to be mugging-central. There are sooo many people now living comfortably in the suburbs because they were mugged on PPW. I thought that was a thing of the past (the 80’s and 90’s) guess not.

I thought I might clarify one “would be” mugging. On December 29th at around 11:00 AM there was a mugging on Prospect Park West. It says in the map that people grabbed the would be mugger and held her. The cops did not get the story right. I actually 4′ 11″ of me and my hero dog chased down this 20 year old woman after she snatched a purse from an older woman. I screamed and yelled running at full speed after her until this man “caught” her at Lincoln place.
I just thought I might get a little credit for this small act of heroism!! Oh and especially I need to give a lot of credit to my very loyal and heroic american bulldog who growled at her until the cops came!
