Paper Source, the paper goods spot to take the place of Bueno (and many restaurants before it), has opened. The store, which is the first Paper Source based in New York, has been open about a week. When we first reported that a stationery store would be moving in to this neck of the woods, some readers were skeptical, especially with Rite Aid and Duane Reade nearby. At least they’re opening at a good time of year!

  1. This store is basically a pop-up location for http://www.paper-source.com and it’s fantastic! Great gifts, cards, and yes scrapbooking supplies. But also, materials for those looking to DIY their party or wedding invitations, or their holiday cards. The staff was super friendly when I was in there last weekend. I’ll definitely be back – and I hope it sticks around longer than your usual pop-up!

  2. I’m not a scrapper (it’s a bit twee for my taste)–for those unacquainted with this humongous thing, it consists of cropping and affixing your photos in albums with all sorts of themed gewgaws, backgrounds, bits and scraps, etc. A fan I know who sells the stuff calls it “today’s answer to quilting” (the many active quilters in the crafts movement would undoubtedly wince at that on several levels). There is also “digital scrapping,” which I do not pretend to understand. The entire thing is an excuse to buy cute little tiny thingies and stick them on pages, which is probably way more fun than ought to be legal and if I ever try it, I will die of mortification at being instantly addicted. So, like karaoke, I steer clear of it.

  3. I actually really like paper… I actually like going into these types of stores. BUT I have absolutely no interest in doing any of the arts and crafts associated with them! It’s sort of like a museum experience… not going to buy anything, though.

  4. While I really like Paper Source, and it is mobbed with people at all times, I am sad for Exit 9, Zoe Paper, and the newish paper store on Court Street. It is in direct competition with these mom-n-pop operations. Let’s hope they all thrive.

  5. When some women get married they force their bridesmaids to make “a page” that will be combined into a giant scrapbook of memories. These pages are best decorated with little bouquets, cake toppers, and silhouettes of a bride and groom. Blech!

  6. I guess it *is* a gal thing. Because if they have halfway decent prices I will shop there. I needed a few photo albums (plain paper) last month that were better than crappy but not $80 leather beauties. Had to go all the way over to Target. Plus, this area is so kid dense and kids makes stuff for school and for fun. Will do well.

  7. There is a Paper Source at South Coast in my California hometown and I believe the most locations are still in California. It is pretty upscale and pricey as many things are now in CA, but I actually think most of their products are worth the money. I am glad that the first location in New York is in Brooklyn. I really don’t think Duane Reade or Rite Aid compete. I think a competitor in NYC might be Paper Presentation in Chelsea, so it seems smart to be in Brooklyn instead.
