  1. There are varying degrees of effort some nannies put into caring for their children. I daily am told by a coworker of having to chase tots down the hallway while one particular nanny gabs away.

What is a nanny for? There are divergent opinions. the parents see it as caretaking and some generalized learning. Many nannies see it that way too, but some see it as “Kid’s alive and healthy? Job well done.”

  2. DIBS, I own STD, AXP, GS, JPM, and BAC but didn’t own C, cuz I have a hard time owning a company I can’t respect. But a coupla months ago I started thinking it was dirt cheap. Instead of putting some real money in, every week I’d just sweep all my dividends into C. Got a few hundred shares but didn’t buy any last week, figured I’d wait for a correction. Wish I woulda kept going…

  3. Most lawyers do. That is the high end, but 10-12 hour days (for the nanny) are almost standard. Factor in parent’s commute time and even if they’re only there for an eight-hour day, the nanny is working 50 hours a week, at minimum.

  4. “i dont know a single person, and have never known a single person, to have to work 12 hour days (at ONE job). that’s just absurd and should be illegal anyway.”

I used to do that shit on a regular basis. They sneak “this job does not adhere to the fair labor standards act” into your offer letter. sneaky bastards.

I actually don’t know many people that work in an office who work 8 hours. 10 hour days seem the norm.

  5. Kens – It would be o.k. to put rosemary & thyme out now – you must get plants & not start from seed to get the real things (greenmarket at GAP will have them.) I’d also go for a sage plant – you usually get a deal on 3 plants anyway. You can start seeds outdoors for parsley, dill, coriander. Too early to put out basil but you could start seeds indoors now. What else are you planning?

  6. For many people, the nannie job is really great. It is a good entree into the US, for one. My cousin’s wife is from Derry Ireland and also happens to love kids. She started out here as a nanny, did a very good job, met then married my cousin and now she is happy as a clam at high tide with her own kids.
