“In California, male illegal immigrants could make decent money as laborers, although they had no benefits, little safety protection, and ran a high risk of being ripped off.”
Very true BHS,
I once hired a crew to do a basement clean-out.
The guy I used to do a lot of handy-man work got in touch with another fellow and he showed up with a trash truck and a crew of guys.
They got to work cleaning out 100 years of trash and debris from the cellar.
It took about 4 hours, the whole morning.
When the time came to settle the bill, the guy with the truck talked to me on the side and gave me his price for his services and the crew. I paid him as expected.
Next thing, we hear the truck tearing out with wheels
burning.
His crew was left there standing, wondering what happened to their pay for the day.
It was a miserable sight to see the three workers standing there dumbfounded.
I paid them each their share and never called the handy-man back for any more work.
BHS, that does sound like the plight of a lot of the farm workers but these days, the vast majority are working in cities, in tight knit communities and their quality of life is much different, not great but much better. Nobody is going around ripping off all the Mexicans in Canarsie or South philly.
BK? What about Sunset Park/Bay Ridge – you can buy decent old houses (i’m presuming you like old stuff), the prices are on this planet, the crime rate is low, the local markets are good and you can chose a good-and-getting-better school district.
Of course if you want the top elementary school in BK you’d have to move to Greenpoint…
CGar, you do know that I’m known as the Pillsbury Dough Boy by my friends right? So be care how that reference is used here

Ditto, BK= Brooklyn. Wife only has eyes for BoCoCa + BK Heights (would settle for ft greene). prices are whack and still raising. hence no buying.
I’m hearing Off the OT that the new site (the look of which I mostly like) is filled with glitches.
dave, why can’t you log in?
“When I am over there I don’t feel pasty at all…”
Only because the UK is perpetually hosting a Pillsbury Dough Boy convention!
