Thanks Slopey. That house was my dream/win the lotto home, but with no hope of ever having a backyard w/ a few feet of grass to run my piggies through, the dream is dashed. Sigh.
jessi- I think the problems is less that people wouldn’t agree that everyone has some sort of basic human rights, but that nobody could consistently agree just what those rights are.
I mean, the alternative, that nobody is entitled to any basic rights, seems rather depressing.
snappy — hard to tell from the photos what happened, and the zoning could be a bit dicey around there as there may be some weird mixed use or overlay designations that might not carry the 30′ requirement. You would have to look at the zoning map, see the designation for the plots at issue and then look at the zoning res for the requirements.
besnon — when we rebuilt our extension, we had to leave 30′. I suspect rule varies based on zoning subclassification, so some residential categories may be 20′ and some 30′. I suspect your other comment was aimed more at the denizens of Borough Park than, say, Park Slope preservationistas. “close knot” and “bloc” voting were the tipoffs.
Did anyone else read this – Are There Natural Human Rights?
I kinda feel bad for the guy who’s dedicated his life to researching this topic when there is such a simple answer: NO.

You know, I’m sure, of the condo development on 15th (they had a lot of opposition when built). How did the owner of 157 16th get away with giving up all the land?
