Benson,
I lived in Hicksville from 1952 to when I went to college in 1966. Using the current demographics of Hicksville to describe my experience there is like using the situation your relative experienced there in the 1980s (?) (not sure about the dates or relationship) to talk about the school and students who now occupy that building.
When I went to the Old Country Road School in Hicksville, there were never more than 2 kids out of 30-31 in my classes who were Jewish. And we Jewish kids were indeed compelled to stand there while the student body recited the Lord’s Prayer (which is not a Jewish prayer) for a few years when I was a student at the Hicksville Junior High School.
Now, is there anything else you’d like to tell me about my childhood? My fellow elementary school students told me that there was a spanking machine at St. Ignatius Catholic school, one of 2 parish Catholic schools in Hicksville at the time (the other was Holy Family). Do you think that was true or that they were just pulling my leg?
So far, my son is showing no signs of growing up to be a moonface. After spending a few hours on Governors Island we were both hot, tired, and hungry.
I offered to get him some hand-crafted ice cream from one of the vendors at Pier 6, but he said he would rather stop by a bodega on the way home and get a bottle of Gatorade and a Hershey’s bar.
true. the warm weather brings out the dickhead in people.
i think if the government gave every person an air conditioner, there would be hardly any violence.
handman gunned down in crown heights
woman shot in the face in the bronx
a health care aide and her boyfriend shot in the face in sheepshead bay
a 15 and 19 year old shot dead in bushwick
etc, etc, etc. police are totally downplaying it too.

Good morning Rf!
I think you should write to these folks, and tell them that they don’t know your hometown too:

According to these folks, Hicksville is about 14% Jewish and about 50% RC.

Also a lot of violence in other cities this weekend – I have seen stories about Miami and Boston.
