  1. “question is ALL of gravesend rich?”

Answer: no, just the eastern half, where the Syrians live. The western half, where I grew up, is your typical southern Brooklyn working-class area.

  2. Slopey, yeah they call it a temple. Never heard it being called a synagogue or shul in that community.

And Lech, you’re absolutely wrong. They can’t pick up the whole community and leave. All the businesses within those blocks are run by Syrians as well. All Kosher restaurants. They only pretty much go to their own kinds for things, except maybe sometimes track to Manhattan to shop at Bergdorff or Saks or Bloomingdales (and that’s only the younger generations). The older ones only shop at their local tailors for custom suits or the women shop at local boutiques. They ONLY pass their business and contract within their family and once you married outside of the community, you are basically cut off from your parents business and most of their inheritance. That’s why they are able to keep so much wealth within their community. Having said that, not ALL syrians are rich. I went with plenty of them to high school who were from normal middle class families. Some leave the community to become doctors/lawyers/financial professionals without going into the family business.

I also know much more than I care to share on an open forum. I’ve shared some of the stories with Mopar when at one of the get togethers and Lech, I can do the same with you.

  3. “a bunch of smart business people become financial retards when it comes to buying a home.”

Your fundamental error is assuming that their home is solely a profit-oriented business transaction. People don’t move when you raise taxes because where you live isn’t simply a question of dollars. Most people don’t flip their houses every five years for the same reason.

  4. “Also, I would estimate their size to be more on the order of 4000 square feet.”

Look at brownstoner’s main page. $10.25 million for 2,914 square feet. You’re seriously telling me your bullshit detector isn’t going off?

  5. question is ALL of gravesend rich? a few years i had to pick something up that i bought off craigslist from gravesend (the woman in the ad said it was gravesend so i assume she was right). she told me to be careful walking to the train when i was leaving cuz the neighborhood wasnt so good. it semed fine, i didnt even really see anyone and it was around 7 in the evening on a summer. i stopped in a bar near i think where the train was only to be refused a drink because i didnt have ID. im never checked for ID, that was absurd. there was also no one in the bar. the waitress looked like one of those stereotypical skank bar maids from a heavy metal video. :-/ i got such strange vibes from that neighborhood.
