  1. There are all kinds of shadings to Asperger’s, from mild to severe. Some have remarkable memory skills -the savantism that Dave refers to, others have keen mathamatical and logical abilities but they have difficulty with the most common of social interactions. They are the opposite of people with high “social” IQ’s who seem to understand what people are feeling or thinking based on the tiniest clues. Such is life. I don’t buy into the notion that there is more illness today than in the past. The opposite is certainly true.
Many diseases such as cancer and diabetes were much rarer in the past because people died before they got it. Also many forms of cancer were termed “consumption” a term that also covering tuberculosis.
Diabetes was less prevalent because malnutrition was much more prevalent. Malnutrition and starvation really cut down on the number of diabetics.

  2. Let’s be clear:
    It’s Asperger’s Syndrome
which is on the emotional/social disorder spectrum which includes Autism and Pervasive Developmental Disorder.
It’s characterized by an acute precociousness in children, advanced verbal aptitude with an inability to gauge emotional tone in others.
