minard,
I don’t entirely disagree with your statement that many conditions were just as prevalent in the past but undiagnosed.
In certain cases, it is absolutely the case however, that there is an increased incidence in the general population for whatever reason yet to be determined.
Diabetes is not a very good example as there are two types;
I (childhood onset with an absolute lack of insulin) and type II (adult onset with a depleted effect of insulin due many times to weight issues).
Autism research however does seem to suggest a real increased incidence, by percentage, in the general population. As others mentioned, it could be due to social factors with older parents, environmental factors or increase in drug use in the general population. It is much more accepted than before the 1960’s.
Yes, I am divulging Benson’s true identity.
He is the brilliant and quite eccentric architect-provocateur, Rem Koolhaas. The ramblings of both are unmistakably the product of the same fecund brain.

“Minard was probably at one of those rowdy brooklyn heights mid-day Capote readings.”
I saw some tourists getting totally plastered at the Brooklyn Heights Wine Bar when I walked past a 2 p.m.
