And while we’re at it, if we have to rank the haters of America, I’d put the right wing nutjobs at the top of the list. They hate America as it is, which is why they work so hard to turn back the clock.

They hate an America that, for the most part, doesn’t care who you choose as a partner, or care who you sleep with. They hate an America where gay couples can get married and have families, like anyone else. They hate an America where a black man can become president, instead of “keeping in his place”. That black people, as well as other minorities, can compete in the marketplace on a common footing. They hate that women can have independent careers, and can go as high in corporate life as they want. They hate that most women refuse to accept a man’s authority over her body, or her mind, or what she does with her time.

They hate that we care about those who have less, or can’t make it on their own, instead of letting them fend for themselves, or stay on their knees in gratitude to their charity. They hate that we negotiate, not nuke. They hate that we are a nation of many faiths, beliefs and traditions, all accepted as viable, including the belief that there is no higher power to believe in. They hate that we accept into the American quilt, the languages, customs, foods, and people of all creeds and colors who flock to our shores.

They want America to be in a time warp, back to the 1950’s, when minorities knew their place, women stayed home, and foreigner’s were only seen in National Geographic. Those days are long gone, and not coming back.

It’s too bad the reflecting pool is under construction, otherwise you could have stood at the end of it to deliver this speech. 🙂

  2. The desier to consume is a given. People will do what it takes to consume because they need or want stuff. What isn’t a given is a desire to produce. Yet lots of production is what makes it possible for people to consume lots of stuff. So how do you incentivize production? By letting people get rich doing it.

Some people see disparities and focus on spreading around the consumption. Take wealth away from producers and give it to certain consumers. The lowers production in two ways. It disincentivizes producers by making it less rewarding to produce, and it removes an incentive for the beneficiaries of wealth transfers to produce in order to be able to consume. And lower production means things cost more and there is less stuff to go around.

I think inheritance is bad because it disincentivizes production. My views on inheritance are very different from most conservatives. I have no problem with taxing inheritance very heavily.
