i remember when we got our first “entertainment unit” it was as if we finally MADE IT! lol. it was nothing more than a cheap ass giant black shelving unit with glass mirrors in the back, shelves made of corregated cardboard, etc that a tv fit into in the middle and the rest was filled with knick knacks and photographs. white trash living at it’s finest 🙂
one of my (outlandish) dreams in life is to be one of those adults who gets an apartment and then can furnish it themselves with whatever they want to buy. i cant picture that happening. my grandparents use to lease some furniture i think from some place in bayonne and buy some random other stuff. it was kind nice tho having new furniture growing up but we’d get “new” furniture every few years, usually when we moved. we never really brought any of old furniture to the new apartment. i had a bed (which doubled as a dresser) that fell apart after just a few weeks, but it was probably because i put it together myself and i was only in 5th grade. the mattress had the universe and moons and planets and stars on it but it was thin as hell and felt like it was filled with bubble wrap (it probably was)
okay i do like some of the stuff from Ikea. the thought of plunking down any amount of money for furniture baffles my mind. from 18 years old til 33 all my furniture came from the streets. dont do that anymore. whatever furniture i currently own will go away via attrition. 10 years from now ill probably be living in a completely bare white walled room with no furniture at all. would never take furniture off the street anymore. unless it’s all sealed metal or glass i guess.
i may have been to the one in jersey back in my mall days that pete was talking about, if it’s the one in i think Elizabeth NJ off the highway or something? not sure. tho i dont think anything is near that one so probably not. is there more than one Ikea in NJ? definitely never went there with any intentions to buy stuff. ODDLY i just glanced over at my shelf that contains my periodicals and academic journals and there is an Ikea 2011 catalog. and on the spine it says “the life improvement store” :-/ how the hell did THAT get mixed up in there!?

Most of my furniture is family stuff or used (antiques.) Very little really ‘new’ except beds & some incidental pieces.
I think with our move here last year, this is the first time in the 16 years I had had my own place where all of the furniture was new when we got it.
For many years the majority of our furniture was used, mostly stuff my mom was getting rid of.
ugh im flipping thru the catalog and want a ton of this stuff it looks kinda great! grrr

quote:
Rob, have you ever been shopping at Ikea?
